Your membership at work…

The 2007 Directory

All BVA members should have received their directory by February 10th.  We are pleased to say our membership has increased and we’ve added more pages and more content.  And we are trying to be greener by choosing lighter paper resulting in a lighter, slimmer directory - using fewer trees and reducing gas consumption during transportation.  Another BVA contribution towards the environment.

Note:  Please take a minute to look through the directory.  In addition to formatting changes there are new pages with additional Emergency Telephone Numbers, Useful Information, Telephone Numbers and Web Addresses.  The aim is to make our directory a very convenient source book for members.  And we want your suggestions about what to add in future.  Please email suggestions to Bayvill@bayviewvillage.org, or call anyone on the executive (numbers are in the directory).

And of course: A Big Welcome to new members!   And we very warmly thank our loyal and repeat members for their continued support and a special thank you to members who made extra generous donations.

Regretfully, we will not be holding the July 1 Canada Day event this year. While many residents look forward to the event the costs are simply proving too high for us to continue. We do plan to hold a community fair September 15 – if you would like to be involved in the BVA Community Fair please call me at 416-222-8365 – we need your help and your ideas.

Bayview Village – Hot! Hot! Hot!

You might have seen some recent news coverage – Bayview Village is considered one of the top 4 hot real estate markets in Toronto. Prices have increased 12.2% in the last year – homeowners experienced a solid return on investment in 2006. Similar growth was also seen in previous years.  Safe communities – great schools and beautiful parks – wonderful neighbours – all located in a community that cares – that all contributes to keeping Bayview Village at the top of the list.

Students Who Need Volunteer Hours

·                    Through the year, BVA can use student volunteers in some community projects in the Village.  The following are upcoming opportunities:  Bayview Village Annual Spring Clean-up on Saturday, April 21 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM and on Saturday, September 15.  Please also email to register to volunteer for any of these events. Please e-mail us at bayvill@bayviewvillage.org to register giving your full name, address and telephone number.

Attention Dog Owners: Pooping and scooping

It is a sad fact that many sidewalks and front lawns in the Village are littered with dog poop, which has been carelessly left there by either dog owners while waling their dogs or allowed to roam free!  In fact it has been reported that a lot of dog owners in the Village are not even seen with any plastic bags.  Please take small plastic bags along and putting your hand inside the bag like a glove, you can pick up, turn the bag over and tie in a knot.  Vegetable bags, newspaper bags and the outer bag 4 litre milk bags all work very well.  Please dispose bags in your own green bin at home.  You can also check your local pet store for several different gadgets that will assist you – especially if bending down is a difficulty.

PLEASE NOTE: IT IS THE LAW THAT DOG OWNERS shall immediately PICK UP THEIR DOG’S POOP left on property anywhere in the city - this includes streets, sidewalks and parks. There is a fine for not doing so.  Please be good neighbours and look after your own neighbourhood!  Outside of the fact that it is the law – (it is commonly known as ‘Poop-and-Scoop Law’) remember it will keep our neighbourhood cleaner, prevent waste from going into sewers, and be safer place to walk and play.

While we are on the subject of pets – We have received complaints about some dogs being allowed to run loose - remember dogs should never be allowed to run off leash – it is dangerous for them – and for others. Keep your pets safe – Keep them on a leash.

Ontario Deposit Return Program and your Blue Box
Wine and liquor bottles have always been acceptable in your blue box-and they still are. They are also now acceptable at local Beer Stores. This new Program will boost recovery rates to an even higher level. The best part is that it's easy for you to make a difference. All you have to do is bring your empty eligible wine, beer and spirit containers to The Beer Store (or other designated Bulk Return Locations) and claim a full refund of your deposit.

It may be surprising to learn that each year, 80 million alcohol bottles, cans and containers end up in Ontario landfills. The Ontario Deposit Return program will help preserve valuable greenspace by diverting these items to a recycling facility where they can be used to create new products like new glass bottles, fibreglass and polar fleece.

Neighbourhood Watch  - by Zel Bocknek

Increase in Purse Snatching: There has been a very disturbing increase in the number of purse snatches in the area over the past couple of months. This has occurred as women walk down the street or even when the culprit jumps out of a vehicle and accosts women returning to their vehicle in a parking lot.

Reduce The Risk: Reduce the risk of being a victim. Park in the busiest, well-lit areas. Walk with a friend when possible. Walk with confidence. Always be aware of your immediate surroundings. (Even when you’re trying to get an unhappy toddler buckled into a car seat!) Reduce the risk of personal loss. Take inventory of the contents of your purse. Do you really need to carry all your identification, credit cards, cheques and cash? Would what you need fit into your pocket? Never have your PIN number written down for someone to find. Reduce the risk of personal injury. In a recent occurrence, the victim chose to hold on to the strap of her purse and was dragged along the ground as the culprit drove away. Release your purse! Make mental note of the culprit’s physical appearance and clothing. Write down any suspect licence plate numbers. Call 9-1-1 immediately!

IPODSare also a major target! Be careful. Enjoy the music but always keep aware of your surroundings. Keep it out of sight – use different earphones (the white ones provided with your IPODS announce to thieves that you have your IPOD with you). Stay alert!

Cold Morning Auto Thefts

Increase in thefts of autos from driveways

Why: You start your car and go back inside to wait for it to warm up - another car pulls up behind your car a person gets out of the car and jumps in your car and drives off. Your car is gone in seconds.

This happens many times a day as cars sit unlocked and running in driveways. The criminals are out there. They know that on cold frosty mornings there are many opportunities for cars just waiting to be taken. There are always reports of these thefts but still they continue.

PLEASE DON’T

         - Leave the car unlocked, running and unattended

         - Run back into the house without locking the car again

         - Put your children in the car and go back into the house

But If You Do – Lock the car

         - Get a second set of keys

         - Equip the car with anti theft electronics to kill the engine
