Thank You

To all who attended the Bayview Village Association’s Annual General Meeting in June. The evening allowed residents and all members to hear the BVA’s Year-End Reports as well as to elect your Executive for 2007-2008 (a list of the executive is included in this newsletter). All members of the executive are neighbours who have committed to volunteering their time to keep Bayview Village a strong and vibrant wonderful.  A Big Thank you to all residents who have offered to serve this year.

The AGM also provided an opportunity to meet and greet neighbours and get the scoop on happenings in the village. We also enjoyed an informative presentation by Ingrid Perry Peacock, President of NYGH Foundation on the many changes and services at North York General Hospital.

City Construction in Bayview Village

Many residents living in Bayview Village on Bomarc Rd., Bunty Lane, Citation Drive, Palomino Cres., Whitelock Cres., Wycliffe Circ. Sutcliffe Dr, Viamede Cres, etc. have received notice that the city will be replacing watermains on their streets starting mid August with an anticipated finish date of the end of December, 2007.

The work will include excavating trench, installation of watermain pipes, pressure testing, chlorinating, flushing, transferring of service connections from the old to the new watermain and upgrading water services from the main to the property line.  Temporary disruptions to the water supply may occur and residents are advised they should take adequate precautions (i.e., ensuring you have obtained a small amount of water available in order to meet your needs for drinking, handwashing, etc.)

3rd Annual Bayview Village Garden Tour

Sunday, June 22, 2008 – Mark Your Calendars

Calling all Gardeners and their gardens!

The Bayview Village Annual Garden Tour was again such a blooming success in 2007 that we are already making plans for 2008.  The date has been set for June 22, 2008 and we want to include you. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the experience of your garden with the Bayview Village Community.

We are looking for gardens to be part of our special day on June 22, 2008. If you are interested please contact Mary Anderson at 416-229-0094.

Plant to participate in 2008.

Green Dishwashing

Did you know? : A normal dishwasher uses 41 litres of water per cycle. Five minutes of rinsing dishes under a faucet uses up to 95 litres of water.  Wise use of an electric dishwasher may be more efficient.  Only use your dishwasher when it is full. Do not use ‘rinse and hold cycle’ for a few dishes.

As much as 80 percent of the energy your dishwasher uses goes to heat water. Check your guide to find the shortest cycles (e.g., china) – and use the short cycles for everything but the dirtiest dishes. Short cycles use less energy and work just as well.  Air-dry your dishes – you can save 10% of the cost of operation and you won’t have to deal with those ‘too hot to handle dishes’.

Don’t Just Throw It Out

Batteries, ‘Regular’ light bulbs, Compact fluorescent bulbs, and Fluorescent tubes – all should be disposed of carefully – they should NEVER be thrown into the garbage.  What should you do? Drop them off at one of the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Depots (call for times: 3350 Victoria Park – 416-392-3025; 50 Ingram Dr - 416-392-5592). Nearby, IKEA has a drop-off for these items on their first floor.  All three locations will dispose of them safely.

Neighbourhood Watch  - by Ron Choi

Marijuana Grow Operations – have been dismantled by police in various neighbourhoods in the GTA.  While we hope this is not part of the Bayview Village experience - residents have asked for us to provide information on ‘what to look for’.

Here are some signs you can watch out for to help police locate and dismantle “Grow Ops”.

Residents that are home for only a few hours each day/night and then leave again

Entry to the house is often made through the garage, rear or side doors

Bright light may be seen escaping from the sides of the windows and the heat inside may cause a layer of

condensation to form on the inside of the windows

Strange skunk-like odours coming from the house

Little or no outdoor maintenance is performed

No garbage put out on assigned garbage day

Indications that children reside in the house but never seen

Hydro meters are tampered with

Recent addition of roof vents

Window coverings (e.g.: drapes/blinds) are never open

Hear the sounds of mechanical exhaust fans in/around the dwelling
