        4th Annual

Winter Magic in the Village

Decorating Challenge

Bayview Village Association is again holding the Winter Magic in the Village decorating challenge.  We invite residents to celebrate the holiday season in December with home outdoor decorations.   Share your holiday spirit with your neighbors and you could win a great price!

We’ve lined up excellent judges who will pick a winner in each of the following categories:

1.  Most original display

2.  Best use of nature

3.  Best use of colour

4.  Best non-electrical display

5.  Merriest Street in the Village

FL-1358 Large 3D LED Snowman Figure

Decorations must be up by Saturday December 22, 2007

How you decorate is up to you.  Residents should note that judging will occur during the evening so displays need to be adequately lit.

Winners will be announced on our web site in time for our residents to view the winning decorations.  So, get your whole family involved and join in the fun.  The more decorated homes we have in the Village, the greater the winter magic.

Time to renew your BVA membership for 2008

You have all received the membership applications.  Please take a minute and join. Membership fees are just $20.00 for the year.  Every member will receive an annual directory. Please note that being a resident of Bayview village does not automatically make you a member of Bayview Village Association.  If you enjoy Bayview Village then remember that the Association helped create and preserve it.

Reason for becoming a member

You will have representation as well as give your support to the efforts being made by the Association to keep Bayview Village a great community and a safe and beautiful neighbourhood!

“A large membership shows government and politicians that we strongly care about issues that affect our community.“

The number of houses that are members measures the strength of an association. For over 50 years Bayview Village Association (BVA) has been a strong, active and well-respected community association. Generations of volunteers helped shape the Bayview Village into a beautiful, safe and desirable area. Your membership is important.  It adds to the strength in numbers, which makes politicians and governments pay attention to the needs of the Village.

New from this year!  For your convenience, we now have an ON-LINE PAYMENT method to join or renew your membership.  Quick and easy and saves save time!  Please go to our website www.bayviewvillage.org and click on JOIN OR RENEW MEMBERSHIP ON-LINE.  You still have the choice to pay by cheque (just enclose it with your application and mail) or drop-off to the addresses on the form.

For you convenience an Application form is included on the back of this newsletter

BVA’s Home Security Forum on Thursday November 22

Many useful tips, warnings and products were presented and we had a good chance to get to know neighbours (the best plan for a safe community).  Thank you to 33 division (Toronto Police Community Liaison Services) and to our very knowledgeable vendors who attended.  Special thanks to Constable Kelly Downie who reminded us of 33 division’s webpage and helpful newsletter:  www.torontopolice.on.ca/d33/ and of the Police non-emergency number at 416-808-2222.

Neighbourhood Watch  - by Ron Choi

 TIPS OF THE MONTH:

Shred – Shred – Shred

Residents should be aware that theives go through garbage and bins looking for personal information – found on envelopes, bills, letters, etc. Play it safe: remove all identification before you put out your papers, try to put out garbage/recycle on the morning of collection, shred all personal information.

Residents have reported observing a man picking through papers in recycle bins.

LOCK YOUR CAR– or if possible keep it in your locked garage. Residents have reported at least two recent incidents of theives breaking into cars during the night (stealing contents) and using garage door openers to gain entry into the garage – and helping themselves to items.

Academic Stars In Our Midst

Congratulations to our students at Bayview Middle School, Elkhorn Elementary School, St. Gabriel Elementary, and Earl Haig Secondary School – once again they achieved well above board and provincial scores on the EQAO annual tests.  We are lucky to have such outstanding schools (and students) in our area and celebrate their successes.

OutDoor Lighting

Switch to seasonal Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for all your festive lighting. LEDs use up to 95 % less electricity, don't produce any heat (making them a safer and more energy efficient choice).

LEDs are virtually unbreakable, more durable and easier to maintain because you won't have to change the bulbs.  Save Money: One dollar will get you 15 days of LED holiday lighting compared to 15 hours of incandescent holiday lighting. One set of 35 LED lights, operating for six hours a day, will consume less than 5 cents of electricity per month.

New Blue Bins Coming To Bayview Village

Toronto will soon begin to distribute new, much larger blue bins for recycling. Depending upon the size you select  (see picture) it will allow you to use just one bin (taking up less space in your garage) and will be on wheels (easier for you to move to the curb and easier for collection). Scarborough will receive them first and we are next.  Our area (i.e., west of Victoria Park, east of Yonge) should expect delivery sometime in February/March 2008.  You will be able to order them by mail or online. You will be notified directly by the city. There will be no cost for these new bins.

NOTE: Also coming are new garbage bins – these will not be available until late 2008 and there will be a cost associated with them. Details will follow.

A Touch Of History

Welcome to the new fire station at Leslie and Sheppard (Fire Station #116)! Bayview Villagers are very pleased to have another fire station and trained personnel ready to serve us in an emergency and to support community safety needs.  Fire fighters have a wonderful history in North York. It wasn’t so long ago that local volunteers acted as firefighters. Here is a picture of one such group of volunteers for the North York Fire Dept from 1935.  More photos and history on North York firefighters can be found at

www.northyorkfire.org
