Here are the winners as selected by our judges. And thank you all for contributing to the Magic!

Neighbourhood Watch  - by Ron Choi

    TIPS OF THE MONTH:

Out Of Town – Away For the Evening?

Then You Need To Create An Illusion of Occupancy

    - Use timers on your indoor and outdoor lights

    - Use exterior motion sensor lights

    - If you are going away have a trusted neighbour, friend or family member pick up your newspapers and flyers, shovel the snow from your driveway,

      park a vehicle in

the driveway, and check on your home

    - Before you leave your home ensure that all windows and doors are locked

    Distraction Thefts

Please be aware that there have been several occurrences of “distraction thefts” in Toronto. This type of theft occurs when the potential thief     alters your attention or focus by distracting you in order to obtain valuables or property without your knowledge. For example: bumping into you in a crowd and stealing your wallet from your purse or pocket; following you from a bank machine and engaging you in conversation while an accomplice steals your wallet or cash; asking for directions or pretending that they are lost (may be used to get inside your home); letting the air out of your tire and offering to “assist you”. Regardless of the ploy used, the outcome is always the same (the theft of valuables or cash).

It is very important to be especially vigilant and conscious of our personal space and belongings. Keep your valuables safeguarded at all times and pay attention. If you feel that something or someone is suspicious remove yourself from the area and report it to the police.

Literary Stars In Our Midst

Last issue we put out a call for local news of local authors.  We are delighted to share with you news of Bayview Village resident Moira Mudie’s recently published book: Chi of the Dragon.

It is about the magic behind the art - the philosophy and symbolism of Oriental Art. This book is beautifully illustrated with her paintings.

Moira teaches her art at the Toronto Botanical society and out of her home in Bayview Village (and has taught in the University of Toronto’s Continuing Education program).  She is very unique person, becoming renown as an expert on Oriental art, speaking Mandarin and leading tours to China, while being a Westerner herself. More about her book is on her website at www.moiramudie.com

The publication of Moira’s book has been well received in the cultural world. A book-signing event at David Mirvish Books on Art in the past year was a great hit.

Anyone interested in buying a copy of her book could contact her daughter Marianne at 416 222-9388 or at mgrconsulting@rogers.com  (cost is $40).

Pet Owners Alert

Be aware that foxes and/or coyotes have been spotted in and near our ravines. There have been reports of these animals preying on small pets. Keep an eye on your pets and keep them leashed - do not allow your four-legged friends to be attacked.  Foxes and coyotes can easily kill our pets.  There have been no incidents of attacks on humans.

By-Laws and You:                 Idle By-Law

We have been asked to update residents (both old and new) on city By-Laws

The Idle By-Law is intended to reduce unnecessary idling in the City. It limits idling to no more than three minutes in a given 60 minute period.

Economic Costs and Operational Impacts

·                                     It has been estimated that 3 per cent of Ontario's fuel is wasted by idling. An idling diesel engine will burn about 2.5 litres per hour. An idling gasoline engine will burn about 3.5 litres per hour. Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting the engine.

·                                     Lubricant contamination occurs from excessive idling. This is because engine operation at idling temperatures creates soot deposits and condensation of water vapour that mixes with sulphur oxides to become sulphuric acid in the crankcase.

Bayview Village Beautification Project

April/May 2008

Beautiful News Announcement:

BVA is planning to add some beauty to the island planters in the middle of Burbank, Hawksbury and Bayview Mews, with flowers and shrubs.  As you may have noticed that they get full of unsightly weeds and garbage.  We have succeeded in getting funds from the City for this project however the City will not do the planting – it must be which has to be done by volunteers.  We have formed a committee to do the initial planning but we need your help – with both the committee as well as with planting.

The actual planting will take place over a weekend in May -

Please contact Tim timlee@sympatico.ca;  Yellena at Ivkovich@rogers.com or

Simin at 416-730-0927 dr.tirgari@sympatico.ca

Smart Meters – Coming Our Way

Toronto Hydro has confirmed that Smart Meter Installation Teams are scheduled to be installed in Bayview Village in the next few weeks.

Smart Meters: will replace your current electrical meter. In addition to recording how much energy is used - it will record WHEN it is used and does not have to be read manually.

SMART METERS will make time-of-use (TOU) prices possible. This will allow Toronto Hydro to offer lower rates to encourage use during ‘off-peak’ times and enable you to better manage your electricity use and your bills.
