LOCAL HISTORY: Phone exchange names once defined neighbourhoods

Are you a BAldwin? Or perhaps a WAlnut or a CHerry? How about a PRincess or maybe a GRover? I'm referring, to the old Toronto telephone exchange names, which if you're over 50 and lived in Toronto, you likely remember yours.  Bayview Village was a BAldwin. Throughout the city you can still see store signs that refer to the old numbers.

In the early telephone days, these exchange names were usually named after the neighbourhoods they served. In 1951 Bell was forced to expand from the two-letter, four-digit system to two-letters, five-digits. And in 1960 announced the gradual phase out of names in favour of “all-number calling”.

These exchange names were easier to remember. And made us feel more of a community. And one final thought:  just think of the old ‘big band’ song PEnnsylvania 6-5000. If written in the last 40 years, it would simply have been: ‘Seven three six five thousand.' ” – Not so catchy and possibly it wouldn’t have been the hit it was.

Some of the Names that were lost in the Toronto area: Don Mills area: Garden; Dufferin area:LEnnox; Victoria Park area:PLymouth; Don Mills  area: HIckory; Willowdale  Finch  area: BAldwin or ACademy;

Neighbourhood Watch  - by Ron Choi

Constable Wayne Pierce (Crime Prevention Officer) from Toronto Police, 32 Division passes along the following information to be shared -

Distraction Thefts Continue

Criminals want your money and work hard to get it. Be aware, they are out there and watching. They watch as you withdraw money from bank tellers and ATM machines. These criminals usually work as a team and when they see a large amount of cash being withdrawn, one of them will follow the intended victim and find a way to distract the victim. These distractions could be anything from slashing your tires, to putting ketchup on your clothing or dropping five dollar bills on the ground. One of the team will act as a Good Samaritan and offer the victim help while the others will take your purse, briefcase or wallet, all in an attempt to separate you from your money. Be cautious and alert to people around you, especially in a bank or when withdrawing money from an ATM. This crime can happen to the most security minded person, these criminals are skilled and well rehearsed.

There are no sure-fire tips that will keep you safe. Try to conceal the amount of cash you are withdrawing. Don’t become complacent and stay focused on what you are doing.

BVA Summer Successes

Bayview Village Beautification Project

Thanks to the many volunteers, led by Tim Lee who planned, selected, planted, toiled and tended the many planters along Burbank, Hawksbury and Bayview Mews. The flowers and trees have been a welcome addition – and they brought many members of the community together to work on the project. And many people have reported that the planter’s visual impact has helped to slow the traffic on these streets.

Your continued support is needed – each planter requires weeding – if you can spare a few minutes and weed one or two – your community – and those beautiful roses will appreciate your work. Call Yellena at 416-733-4108 for details.
